Which Way Wichita

Driving from Wichita Falls to Austin one rainy Sunday afternoon, I saw a small puppy running down the side of the highway. I looked and looked away and drove about a mile before I whipped a u-turn and went back. By the time I got back to him he was crossing the highway on a bridge and a car sped by narrowly missing him. He threw himself against the rail of the bridge, frantically trying to get away from the passing cars. I pulled over and jumped out. When he saw me he started to run away. I dropped to my knees and called him. He stopped and started towards me then stopped and ran away and then stopped and looked at me, then looked away, then looked at me. At that moment he made up his mind and he ran straight for me from 30 feet away and he ran without hesitation until he landed in my arms. He started screaming loudly as he clung to me. My friends and I wrapped his thin, wet, tick covered body in a towel and he screamed for 5 minutes until he fell asleep on my lap.

He not only planted himself in my heart but he planted himself at the house. You could leave the front door wide open and he would not leave. We had to carry him out of the house for his first vet appointment. And for the first 3 years of his life he would jump away from the road every time a car went by on our walks.

He’s a perfect cuddly lovable mild mannered house mate. He never does anything wrong. But, walk into an agility or flyball arena and you can watch him transform into a wild dog, frothing at the mouth and barking non stop, ready to take control of the field. There’s no question which way Wichita is heading.
