I got Mazie as a 4 lb., 8 week old puppy from the Sacramento County Animal Shelter where she, her mother and 9 brothers and sisters had been for the past three weeks as part of some criminal impound. She didn't have much hair in certain places and was shaped like a little hippo with short legs, a pot belly and ears sticking out the side of her head, but when I clapped my hands, she came running right over, rolled on her back and licked my fingers. Who could resist. From day one, Mazie has been a very active, friendly, curious, playful little dog. Her most distinctive feature, however, wouldn't be fully revealed until week 10, when her ears assumed their place atop her head. Thanks to a former co-worker of mine who looked at little Mazie dashing around a field and proclaimed her a flyball height dog (a what?), Mazie and I got hooked up with Pawdemonium's January 2001 flyball class and went to our first tournament that August. Much to my surprise, instead of racing wildly around the field licking everyone, Mazie, with help from her Chaos teammates, actually managed to earn her FD and FDX titles. Mazie loves flyball. Of course Mazie loves any activity that allows her to run, play and be around people. If she hasn't had enough exercise, sometimes the only way to get her to settle down at bedtime is to turn on Animal Planet and let her watch other animals run around and play.
