The River Runners are spending the summer laughing and playing with some fabulous intermediates!
Please contact us about Beginner Classes. The next set will start in September.
For information on classes, please email rugratandfriends@shaw.ca
The River Runners hold classes throughout the year, taking small breaks around Christmas and after hosting our Woof Wars tournament in May.
Commonly held classes include:
Puppy Class |
Beginner |
Intermediate/Advanced |
Puppy class caters to the younger dogs, as puppies often do not have the attention span/focus to work for an hour long Beginner session. Classes are shorter in length, and incorprate many short drills/games/exercises to keep the puppy mind active and engaged in learning. Puppy class focuses on lower impact drills and learning experiences, recognizing the damage that high impact exercises can cause rapidly growing bodies. When puppy class is not offered, puppies are still welcome to enroll in Beginner class. *We ask that puppies be in good health and have had (or are about to have)their second set of shots. |
Beginner class focuses on the fundamentals of flyball, as well as building focus and a working relationship with your dog! Classes sizes are generally small, with a number of trainers/helpers/cheerleaders helping everyone along. Dogs in beginner class will learn the basics of jumping on command, responding to voice commands and hand signals, retrieving, focusing on the handler in a high drive situation, small passing exercises, and the fundamentals of the swimmer's turn. The beginners class is all about the pieces of flyball. These components are then chained together, patterning the dog to the game!
|
The intermediate class takes everything you learned in beginner flyball and puts it together! In intermediate class, emphasis is placed on building a safe and reliable swimmer's turn off of the flyball box, as well as passing exercises, working away from the handler, and chaining the four jumps and box together. Intermediate classes are generally smaller than beginner classes, and more focused on individual issues. All dogs and handlers are required to take at least one intermediate/advanced session before they will be considered for membership to the team, or asked to join team practice. |
Please keep in mind that not every dog will advance at the same rate... this does not mean that they aren't learning the game, or won't be fantastic flyball dogs! Much like people, every dog learns in a different way and excels at different aspects of the game. Each dog in class is an individual, and musn't be compared to his or her classmates!
The River Runners are positive trainers, and train using reinforcement... not punishment! We ask that those attending class bring small, soft treats with them (soft cookies, cheese, weiner, etc.), and their happy voices! We try to make each class a positive experience for both dog and handler.
