Unleashed Furry Flyball Team

Dogs just want to have fun and we want to provide an avenue for you and your dog(s) to have fun in a competitive environment. Unleased Furry is a young and growing Flyball Club which welcomes any breed of dog as long as they think balls are positively irresistible. Our number one goal is to have fun with our dogs!

Flyball is a relay race with 4 dogs on a team. The course consists of a starting line, 4 hurdles spaced 10 feet apart and a box. The first hurdle is 6 feet from the start line and the box is 15 feet from the last hurdle for a 51 foot overall length. The dogs jump the hurdles and steps on a spring loaded box that shoots out a tennis ball. The dog catches the tennis ball and then runs back over the 4 hurdles. When the dog crosses the starting line the next dog goes. The first team to have all 4 dogs run without errors wins the heat The hurdles' height are dependent on the height of the dogs in the team -- 4" below the shoulder height of the shortest dog. 8" is the minimum height and 16" is the maximum height.

About Us

We started our own flyball club because the founding members had three ball-driven border collies who were quick to catch on to this fun sport. Dogs who love playing ball quickly catch on to the game and the equipment can be easily transported. We started the club in Tierrasanta because we found an interest with many local dogs. We are people who are crazy about our dogs and enjoy a sport like Flyball which reinforces a dog's drive to please us! Our team's main goal is to work with our pets in order to develop both their skills, and our own, in the sport of flyball.

We feel that the competitive nature of the sport should never be allowed to become more important than the enjoyment of it. The reason for our participation in this game is for the enjoyment of our dogs. We may well want our dogs to run their best in tournaments, however, winning is a concept that the dogs do not understand. Our primary objective, then, is to follow their example and enjoy the pure fun of the game - win or lose.

We use the most current positive training techniques. Practice is held every Sunday morning in Tierrasanta at 9:00 a.m. Newcomers are welcome to attend practice. Bring your dog and see if he or she has what it takes to be a flyball dog! For practice times and directions to practice please email Kathy Woody.

Founding Members are: Lyn Edds with Dallas, Michael McGlinn with Cody, Kathy Woody with Bonnie

Team Bios

Bonnie is a 4 year old Border Collie owned by Team Captain, Kathy Woody. Bonnie loves playing ball, Frisbee, Agility, and swimming (not exactly in that order). She has been active in agility for the last three years--last year she qualified for the National USDAA Animal Planet agility competition. I've decided to add flyball to her repertoire because she is so ball-driven.

Cody is a 4 year old Border Collie owned by Equipment Manager and co-founding members, Michael and Melinda McGlinn. Cody and Michael enjoy running around the foothills of Tierrasanta. In addition to Cody's recent Flyball skills, Cody enjoys competing in Agility competition. He has gained his Open titles in NADAC, USDAA, and AKC agility events.

Dallas lives at home with her two siblings Tootsie Roll a 2 year old Dachshund and Sara Jane a 4 year old mini-Dachshund. She likes to play ball and is not particular about any of her playmates as long as they can throw a ball!

Fumble is 1-year old ball-obsessed Jack Russell Terrier who has quickly caught on to the game of Flyball. He started practice with us four months ago and is already a terrific flyball dog. Fumble is owned by Matt and Julie Steitz. We think Fumble inherited a lot of his ability from his football-loving dad.

Fumble, San Diego CA

Scruff's is a nearly 3 year old (7/6/98), blond terrier mix aka "American Tennis Ball Retriever." He is owned by Diane Pinney of San Diego. He looks like Tramp from Lady and the Tramp but has the attitude of their son, Scamp. Scruffs was adopted from the Central San Diego Animal Shelter in January of 2000 and has shown a strong ball drive (having found, stolen, or absconded with over 30 tennis balls now found in his toy bin.) He's fast and smart and always keeps his owner on her toes. He shares his home and his walks with a 16 year old cat named Toby.

Bailey is a six-year-old yellow Labrador retriever who shares her life with two humans and a beloved grumpy cat. She is an athletic frisby and ball player, as well as an amazing swimmer at dog beach. She will swim past the surfers to retrieve a plastic duck, yet she will not get her paws wet on the morning dewy grass -- go figure! Bailey is a beginner to flyball but has, like most other things she tries, become extremely proficient. She is also a certified therapy dog and a lover of any flavored skin lotions. Bailey's favorite foods are avocados and marshmallows. She has many nicknames, including B, BeeZee, Missy, Missy B, and Bailey Bean..
